Letter from the editor – July 2025

I’m sure that many of you will be able to relate when I say that the end of the summer term is always mayhem, as we hurtle towards the never-ending summer holidays. As usual, we will not be producing a paper in August. It’s been a rollercoaster ride so far this year: we really need to rest and recharge our batteries so that we are ready to bring you your papers through autumn and winter!

Don’t worry though, although we won’t be around in August we’ve made sure our What’s On pages this month cover the whole summer, so you won’t miss out on any of the amazing events and activities that are happening in Tandridge.

Our front page story comes from Bletchingley, where local schoolchildren Anya and Jessica have been selected to perform in English Youth Ballet’s production of Swan Lake in October. We also discovered that talented Caterham artist Tom Bushnell is a regular visitor at The Westway Centre – find out more about him on page eight.

If you are a local business owner, have you thought about entering the Tandridge Business Awards? In her column this month, leader of the council Catherine Sayer tells us how they are an opportunity for companies to showcase their strengths and gain recognition for their hard work and dedication.

Kim Cooper, aka KC Travels, tells us how to Travel Smarter in Vienna and lets us know about her brand new podcast. If you love travelling, and would like to know how to do it like Kim does, make sure you give it a listen!

We recently held our first networking event in the grounds of Sunnydown School in Caterham,  which was a huge success. Headteacher Paul Jensen and his team were the perfect hosts, welcoming our early morning guests with breakfast cooked on the barbecue. I’d like to say a big thank you to them, as well as everybody who came along to support us. Putting names to faces and meeting new people is one of my favourite things to do, and I’m already planning our next event for September – keep your eye out for details.

And talking of Paul…he’s been leading Sunnydown since 2014, but he’s recently announced that he will be moving on to pastures new at the end of this academic year. We’d like to wish him all the best in his future endeavours: the school has paid tribute to him on page three.

Our competition prize this month is a fab hamper from Morrisons – info on how to enter is just to the right of this letter, so be quick and enter for a chance to win!

As always, the Tandridge Independent is here for you, so please get in contact with your stories and any ideas for things you’d like to see in the paper – email us on newsdesk@tandridgeindependent.com.

Have a great summer and see you in September!
