New vicar at St John’s

By Susan Gibbin, churchwarden

We welcome the Revd Jaimee Summers, recently appointed vicar at St John the Evangelist, Caterham Valley.

Although this is Jaimee’s first post as vicar, their previous curate work in East London and Epping means they bring with them lots of great experience of both nourishing established and developing new worshipping communities. When asked how they feel about the role, Jaimee said:

“It is a privilege to be working in Caterham Valley, and I look forward to meeting many of the people here over the next few months, and becoming involved in the local community. St John’s Church is blessed in many ways and has, at its heart, a desire to bless the local community here in Caterham. I am excited to see how this relationship can continue to develop.”

Jaimee’s priorities over the next few months are to continue to see more people in Caterham considering St John’s as a place of warm welcome, where they can come and be themselves. This includes working closely with schools and local institutions and care homes to support the people of Caterham; sharing the message of open welcome and affirmation, and encouraging engagement between the church and community. Jaimee also highlighted the following areas for action:

“St John’s is an inclusive church and we will be working together as a team to try to make the space and the services as accessible and inclusive as they can be. I want to nurture and support the incredible work the church is already doing, and encourage those who may be questioning if church is for them.

We will also be supporting the continuation of our strategy towards becoming more ecologically aware by empowering the young leaders of Green Club to continue to speak up about green issues and creation care as well as promoting eco-awareness in the local community.

In summary, we will be working towards creating a community of love and joy in the heart of Caterham, where people who may feel overlooked or on the edges, for whatever reason, can be empowered to come and make a spiritual home.”

We welcome all to our Christmas services this year, a great opportunity to meet Jaimee.  These include:

21 December at 19:00 – Nine Lessons and Carols Service

24 December at 16:00 – Christingle Service

24 December at 23:30 – Midnight Mass
