It’s always a quiet time of the year following the exertions of Christmas. Our first fundraising event – a quiz – was obviously popular, as we sold out five weeks in advance. In case you missed out, we plan to hold two more quizzes this year, on 15 June and 27 September.
Lions fame has spread to the Surrey Fire & Rescue Service. At a recent talk to Godstone’s Cameo Club (a social club for older people – CAMEO stands for Come And Meet Each Other), one of the preventative measures put forward was for each elderly person to have a message in a bottle. This is an excellent scheme where details of medication, and possibly contacts, are placed in a special bottle which then goes in the person’s fridge. A sticker, which alerts the paramedics, for instance, that everything they need to know is in the fridge, is placed by the front door.
Local Surrey Lions Clubs have provided Surrey Fire & Rescue with over 1,000 of these to give away to those who might find them useful. They can also be picked up in libraries, pharmacies and medical practices throughout Tandridge. Anyone who is on their own and takes regular medication should really have a Message in a Bottle: if you would like more information on where you could pick one up, contact Lion Tony on 01883 335945.
This month, we will be taking a stand at the Warlingham Hobbies Event on Saturday, 15 March at Warlingham Church Hall. It runs from 11:00 – 14:00; why not come along and talk to us to see how you can help your community?
Looking further ahead, our annual Swimathon will take place on the 10 May at De Stafford School in Caterham on the Hill. If you have a group which would like to take part and raise money through sponsorship for your own organisation, as well as Lions’ charities, please request an information pack via coglions@lineone.net. Lion Sarah would be pleased to hear from you.
If you would like to know more about your local Lions Club, the person to speak to is Lion Tony on 01883 741809 – he would be delighted to chat to you. You might be invited to attend a Business Meeting (without obligation) to see what we do.
The Lions also have a Minibus available for community use – Lion David is the person to speak to about this on 01342 893353
