Letter from the editor – October

….and here we are in October. I’m sure, just like me, many of you have already started planning this year’s Christmas celebrations and may have even bought a few presents! I know not everybody wants to be thinking about the festive season this early, but for me it’s a very exciting time of year: I love adding all the school and local events to our calendar!

Half-term is only a couple of weeks away too, and we have included some great suggestions for activities for you and your family to enjoy in our What’s On pages.

Over the past five years I have carried out many talks at schools, clubs and community events and I always enjoy talking about my career and the paper. As part of their alumni, I was invited to be the guest speaker at Oxted School’s recent prize giving evening and, as I stood and spoke to the students, memories of my own school days flooded back to me. I envisaged my head teacher walking into the hall in his cloak to take the early morning assembly and for a few minutes I became a schoolgirl again – isn’t it funny how our minds do this? It was an honour to be invited to speak there and I would like to thank Oxted School for the opportunuity to share my experiences with their current students.

I was also invited to attend the preview opening of a new private GP practice in Oxted. The Well Life Clinic is opening to residents this month and will offer an array of treatments, from general appointments, same-day blood tests, and minor surgeries through to ADHD assessments and diagnosis, men’s health and genetic screening.

Our columnists have got their usual advice for you, including Neil Miller, head gardener at Hever Castle & Gardens, whose Green Tips column is all about caring for your dahlias, and Kim, from Travel Smarter, who is getting us ready to hit the slopes! We’re also bringing you news of a charity football match taking place in South Godstone at the end of October which is raising money for local charity Aoife’s Bubbles.

Thank you for reading this month’s issue – I’ll see you back here next month when the Christmas countdown will really have started!
