Caterham, Oxted & Godstone Lions Club’s Annual Swimathon took place at de Stafford School on 18 May and was attended by over 90 swimmers in 14 teams. The ‘most lengths’ category was won by Godstone’s Taekwondo Club, who completed 73 lengths in 25 minutes – they must be fit! The Lions fielded a team which completed 53 lengths – well done them too! The whole event was safely managed and all the children and parents present said how much they enjoyed the afternoon.
On the social front, several members of the club attended the Miller Centre to see the play Handbagged and are looking forward to the annual Handover Lunch which combines business with social as the new Lionistic Year begins on 1 July.

The May business meeting celebrated Lion Peter Drysdale’s 90th Birthday. A civil engineer by profession, Peter was given early retirement in 1993 and was able to pursue his Lions activities to the full. He was club president on two occasions, became district governor for the Lions District of South East England in 1995, held the post of district secretary and was part of a district committee which founded a Lions Club in Gomel, a town in Belarus badly affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
There were also several years as international relations officer for the district, with many occasions of socialising with the twinned district in central Germany, but Peter did all this without ever neglecting the support of his local club.
As mentioned last month, the Lions need HELP (quoting The Beatles) at Godstone August Bank Holiday Fete. The marquee goes up on the Sunday, and we need ‘all hands and more’ for this as well as on the Monday itself, to flip burgers and provide drinks for the masses who attend this delightful event. If you or anybody you know is willing to give a hand – every little bit helps – please ring Lion John on 01883 742680.
We would love to hear from anyone who would like to find out more about our very friendly club. Our membership secretary is Tony Carter: contact him on 01883 741809 or tonylcarter@outlook.com.
The club has a minibus available for community use. Contact Lion David on 01342 893353.
