Renowned comedian Ricky Gervais has donated £1.9 million to 11 animal charities across the globe, including one in Tandridge. The 63-year-old, who is vegan and a prominent animal rights activist, used profits he generated from Platinum ticket sales during his Armageddon world tour to support nonprofit causes like Chaldon Animal Sanctuary, which has received almost £45,955 in funding from him.
Chaldon Animal Sanctuary was set up in 1991 by two friends: fosterer Jacky Miles, who passed away in 2011, and vet nurse Liz Underwood. It is a privately run, nonprofit residence for cats and dogs who cannot be re-homed due to age or behavioural issues, or who are due to be put down and have no other options.
“I am thrilled and grateful to announce that Ricky supported us with an amazing donation of £45,954.48,” says Liz. “I was speechless when I heard the news… This wouldn’t have happened without Peter and I am incredibly honoured by his help and belief in the sanctuary.”
‘Peter’ is the sanctuary’s patron, the actor Peter Egan, who put it forward to be considered by his friend Gervais. Egan was delighted that the comedian chose to support it:
“I am proud to be a patron for Liz and Chaldon Animal Sanctuary,” he said. “From the moment I first met her many years ago, I could see that she had a magical and compassionate relationship with all the animals in her care. I am so pleased this has been rewarded by a donation from Ricky Gervais from his Platinum ticket fund. I know that the money is needed and will be well spent.”

Underwood, who looks after the cats and dogs round the clock, specifically prioritises animals that are refused space at kennels or catteries, so that they can have a place ‘where they feel safe, loved, happy and are respected’. With approximately three acres of land, the rescued animals can spend time outside in an enclosed field, as well as having permanent residence in a bungalow with cat flaps, a cat pen and numerous beds.
For Underwood, it is important that supporters can see their donations are being spent on necessities like food, pet furniture, vet bills and the upkeep of the home – not on ‘cars, fancy offices or holidays’. Gervais’ donation will be spent on ongoing maintenance, as well as adding cat-proof fencing around the property.
