Letter from the Editor – June 2023

Well, here we are again and this time I’m actually sitting in my garden writing to you. Hard to believe that just a few weeks ago there were hail storms and potential threats of snow!

This month’s paper brings you our usual columnists’ expertise, and another great competition, generously donated by Surrey National Golf Club in Chaldon. One of our lucky readers will win a four-ball game on their amazing 18-hole golf course, accompanied by bacon rolls and coffee, so make sure you enter – all the details you need are on this page!

We always like to keep you updated with news from past work experience students, and our front page photo features Sophie Denny, who was with us in 2021. Sophie recently received her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, and was invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace, hosted by the new Duke, Prince Edward.

As you know, we love getting out in the district. Reporter Rosalind Brookman spent a morning at Godstone Fire Station, meeting Tandridge borough commander Paul Bowyer and the crew of White Watch, and finding out more about the vital services they provide. She also attended an Oxted & Limpsfield Music Society concert, where talented young pianist Ignas Macknickas performed works by Schubert and Schumann.

Other articles include an update on the Lingfield Irish dancers who competed at the World Championships, and the fantastic news that Ruben’s Fund (the charity set up by Charlotte Dyer and Patrick Jones following the death of their son to raise money for research into infant cardiomyopathy) has now reached an amazing 100k!

And we also discover the tough selection process a Caterham School student went through to win a place on the Great Britain team heading to Tokyo in the summer to take part in the International Physics Olympiad.

And finally, don’t forget that Surrey’s largest play barn is set to open this month at Godstone Farm – it will be well worth a visit if you have little people who love discovering, exploring and, of course, playing!

I’d like to say a big thank you to all our readers – we appreciate every single one of you. See you next month!
