Girlguiding in Tandridge: Busy Brownies!

This month we’re visiting the Brownies, our seven to 10-year-olds. It’s a time full of ‘firsts’ – they might grow their first plant, put up their first tent or light their first fire. When this leader was a Brownie, we used to dance around a toadstool, have uniform inspections, learn to bake and serve cups of tea.

These days things are a little different.  Interest badges cover themes from archaeology to zero waste, as well as activities like painting, grow your own and languages.  There’s something for every Brownie, and plenty of moments they’ll never forget.

Getting to know Buster the Bunny

At the end of last term, Buster the Bunny brought Easter chocolate to Caterham Hill’s Rainbows and Brownies.  It was wonderful to see one Brownie overcoming her fears as she was gently encouraged to get nearer and nearer until finally she felt ready to stroke him.

Looking at old maps in Caterham Valley Library

Meanwhile, 11th Caterham visited the Valley library and enjoyed exploring old maps of the area and reading books, and 1st Chelsham Brownies had a sleepover at Paxmead, a Girlguiding activity centre at Shepperton.  Leader Catherine, who you met last month, says they all had an amazing time and can’t wait to go again.

As the paper goes to print, final preparations are being made for trips away by Brownies at the 2nd Warlingham and 1st Lingfield units. It’s a very exciting time and our encouraging volunteers will help everyone to explore their creative side, get into the great outdoors, and start learning to look after themselves, others and the world we all live in.

Finally, three Brownies from 4th Caterham achieved their Gold awards and we are very proud.  They can’t wait to start at Guides after the Easter holidays. In the June edition I will take you on a whirlwind tour of the Guide units in our area.
