The 2020 Rotary Young Chef Competition District Semi-final took place at Oxted School on Saturday 18th January. It featured eight competitors from the Rotary Clubs of Oxted, Caterham, and Grinstead Meridian. Between them they represented Oxted School, de Stafford School, Caterham School, Imberhorne School and Sackville School.
Each participant was required to prepare two portions of a three-course meal, with the theme of healthy eating. They were given a £20 budget for ingredients and had a time limit of two hours to complete their recipes.
Judges Giovanni Fontebasso, Omero Galluci and Sukias Tchillingirian assessed them on several criteria, including planning and time-keeping, hygiene, knife skills, technical skills, minimum waste and overall presentation.
The winners were Tilly and Georgia, both from the Rotary Club of East Grinstead Meridian. They will now go forward to the Rotary District Final at Merton College on the 29th February. Sky-Brooke from The Rotary Club of Croydon and First Year student at Caterham School was the runner-up in the Annual Contest which featured approximately 8,000 students competing across the UK.
The District competition was organised by the The Rotary Club of Oxted, with the support of Emma Wicks and Sevgin Djemil, Oxted School’s Head of Technology and Head of Food Technology respectively. The Rotary Club of Oxted would like to thank Oxted School for their continuing support.
