Message from Claire Coutinho East Surrey MP – July 2020

Over the past month the Government has been relaxing social distancing measures as the number of new COVID-19 infections fall.

I am sure many of you will be as delighted as I am with the news that from the fourth of July the UK will be opening-up with the new safety guidance.
This is great news particularly for families who can now reunite and for many local businesses that will be allowed to open.

Hotels, campsites, restaurants, pubs, outdoor gyms and hairdressers will be allowed to open but must follow the relevant safety guidance to protect staff and customers. Social distancing should now be maintained at 1m where 2m is not feasible.

Children's playgrounds are also opening. This is a very welcome development because interacting with other children is a key part of any child's development and these playgrounds are so important for people who don't have gardens.

Battle of Britain

The 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place from July to October 1940, is particularly meaningful for the Kenley Airfield Friends Group (KAFG).
One of three strategically important airfields tasked with defending London during World War II (the others being Croydon and Biggin Hill), RAF Kenley played a vital role in protecting the south-east of England from German Luftwaffe attacks.

The KAFG have spent the last few years restoring the airfield, through their Kenley Revival Project. Despite being the best-preserved Battle of Britain fighter station in the UK, lack of attention over the decades had left it at great risk of dilapidation. The KAFG are determined to protect this important space and ensure that its future can tell the story of its past.

The Beginning

Originally a golf course and common, Kenley was transformed into a military airfield in 1917 by the Royal Flying Corps, the air arm of the British Army, under the ‘Defence of the Realm Act’. It was used as No. 7 Aircraft Acceptance Park, where aircraft parts would be delivered, assembled and tested, before being flown out to France by the Royal Flying Corps. In 1918 the RFC merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to become the Royal Air Force, remaining on site at Kenley.

The Community Foundation for Surrey

The Coronavirus Response Fund, established by The Community Foundation for Surrey was set up in 2005 to enable local charities, situated across 11 Surrey boroughs quickly and efficiently during the pandemic. The foundation is part of a national network of 46 Community Foundations and includes money raised from the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Public Appeal.

The Community Foundation works with donors and voluntary groups by providing vital services for local people and disadvantaged individuals. Since being established it has awarded grants in excess of £12 million. To date, a total of £66,945 (across 14 grants) has been distributed to charities and voluntary groups within the borough of Tandridge.

The concept is to bring together local donors to provide positive solutions to the issues facing Surrey. They aim to do this by working closely together with organisations across the county to identify crucial areas where the support from our community will be most needed.

Furlough Advice

I am Chantal Baker, Director and founder of Champ Consultants. We are accountants and tax consultants based in Caterham. We are looking forward to providing you with business and finance tips as well as answering your questions.

Question:
Can I start my own business while I am on furlough?

Answer:
With lots of people on furlough since March, I have come across this question on numerous occasions. The furlough scheme is set in place until October 2020 and I expect this question may come up again in the future, even with some employees being taken back part time from July 2020.

You are permitted to work elsewhere and even to start your own business while on furlough, subject to various conditions. The main condition that needs to be considered whether you are taking another job or are starting a new business, is that the new position is not in breach of your employment contract.

St Peter and St Paul Infant School, Chaldon

Covid-19 has demonstrated how much we all owe to the people who have continued to provide a vital public service and had to cope with extraordinary pressures at work while dealing with all the demands of life and family. There are heroes across all our public service workers, and we owe them a huge debt for the sacrifices they have willingly made.

But I want to highlight our teachers and in particular, all the team that have kept St Peter and St Paul Infants School Chaldon open throughout the pandemic. Under the leadership of the Headteacher, Rosie Burgess the school has stayed open and welcomed pupils from key workers and vulnerable children, including some from other schools that had remained closed. The School provided a safe and stimulating place for both pupils and staff. This has been an extraordinary effort involving detailed risk management and having to balance the needs of pupils, the expectation of parents and the wellbeing of all staff.

The school's support for vulnerable children has been exceptional, visiting home addresses, arranging food parcels and vouchers and doing everything possible to maintain a high level of support for both pupils and parents. The school did this while at the same time responding to an urgent call from SCC to take an additional reception class in Sept this year. An outstanding effort that has involved recruiting new staff and organising building work to be ready for nearly 60 new pupils in a few months.
