Members of Lingfield’s Gibbins School of Irish Dance (GSID) saw success in the World Irish Dance Association’s British Open Championships In October, with one dancer, Tatiana Nesterenko, winning the Under-35s solo category.
As well as Tatiana taking the U35s British Open Champion title, GSID dancers Ciara Redmond and Stephanie Shaw came 2nd and 3rd in the intermediate category, while Faith Scanlon and Charlotte Bradford came 2nd and 3rd in the beginners. Their stellar performances mean that Tatiana, Ciara and Stephanie have also qualified for the World Championships in Belgium next year, along with Caroline Bool, who qualified at a different event.
To win, Tatiana had to compete in four rounds. The initial three rounds consisted of a treble jig, the slip jig and a traditional choreography. A panel of judges then scored the dancers over all three, with the top 50% of contestants going forward to complete a modern set: an individual choreography danced alone.
The most memorable moment for Tatiana was the award ceremony.
“The places are announced from fifth to first and, while listening to the results, you really hope they will call your name as late as possible!” she said.
For Rachel Costley, the founder of GSID, Tatiana’s success in the competition has been emotional.
“I became a teacher in my spare time after having to give up my own competitive career due to health reasons,” she said. “Teaching dancers who want to compete allows me to feel part of it again and I’m so proud of what they’re achieving! Tatiana thoroughly deserves her success and we are looking forward to the World Championships.”
Rachel says that GSID’s dancers are already busy preparing for their next competitions.
“We have quite a few coming up: in Haywards Heath in December, in Swindon in February and in Stratford-upon-Avon in March, as well as the big one – the World Championships – in April.”
