October at St John's

In October, St John’s Church, Caterham, will be singing some of the hymn tunes and church music written by Ralph Vaughan Williams, who was born on 12 October 1872. As music editor of the English Hymnal, Vaughan Williams had enormous influence, and brought many folk tunes back into churches.

Much loved are Down Ampney, for Come Down, O Love Divine, and Sine Nomine, set to For All the Saints. Less well-known are Magda, and Randolph, set to God Be With You Til We Meet Again.

Dates to look forward to are the 40th wedding anniversary of Fr Jerry and Anne- Marie Garton on 2 October at 10:00, and Tuesday, 4 October at 19:30: the 25th anniversary of Fr Jerry’s ordination, and Anne-Marie’s 20th anniversary of becoming a deacon. All are welcome.
