Use your paper banknotes by the end of September

The Bank of England is reminding people to use any remaining paper £20 or £50 notes they have by the end of September 2022, the last day they will have legal tender status.

Polymer versions of the £20 note, which has a picture of the artist JMW Turner on it, were released in February 2020, and the polymer £50 note, which features Alan Turing, was issued in June 2021. However, there are still over 300m paper £20 notes and 160m paper £50 notes in circulation, worth more than £6bn and £8bn respectively.

Anybody who still has a paper banknote should either spend it, or deposit it in their bank or at a post office by 30 September.
