Tandridge resident David Gold is the joint chairman of West Ham United football club, as well as the owner of Gold Group International, the parent company of companies such as Anne Summers, Knickerbox and Greenwich House Properties.
His house in Tupwood Lane, Caterham boasts a 19-hole, par-71 golf course, which he designed and commissioned 30 years ago, and has personally developed over the last three decades. Before the pandemic, David often hosted open days, and this summer he is delighted to once again be opening the course to local residents and avid golfers, with all the proceeds going to St Catherine’s Hospice and the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
The Tandridge Independent were invited to the site at the end of June, to spend the morning with David, and find out more about what visitors can expect when they arrive.
The £800, four-ball private golf day package starts with breakfast rolls in the kitchen, plus the chance to talk football and business with Mr Gold himself over a coffee. Guests can then head out to the golf course, with buggies provided to take them around.
Decorative features
During our tour, David explained some of the decorative features that can be viewed throughout the course, including ornamental deer hiding in the bushes, and the West Ham emblem of crossed hammers, which his groundsman Pete has etched into the grass.
The course has only seen four holes-in-one, including one by the actor Robert Powell, and one by David on his 80th birthday: an event which he delightedly added to his celebrations! The record for the course is held by Jeremy Richards, who completed it in 63, from a handicap of 10.
A highlight, for those who book a golf day, is the inclusion of a trip to David’s photo room. The walls are covered in images of the businessman and his family meeting a whole host of instantly recognisable people, ranging from royalty to celebrities and sports personalities. A fascinating experience, and one filled with memories and stories which, if you are lucky, Mr Gold may share with you!
David Gold’s private golf day is available seven days a week, and bookings can be easily rescheduled if the weather is unsuitable.
