After several years of uncertainty the future of North Downs Golf Club, Woldingham, has been secured, following an announcement that the site has been purchased by a private individual. The buyer has subsequently entered into a lease agreement with specialist charity, Get Golfing.
Edward Richardson, chief executive of the organisation, said they are delighted with the acquisition:
“The club has been through a period of uncertainty and for it now to be in the safe hands of Get Golfing will lead to a bright new chapter in its long history. We believe we can improve the club, and increase the amount of golf played there.
We will be rolling out a range of activities aimed at offering local people, who do not perhaps play golf, the opportunity to use North Downs to improve their health and well-being.”
Deborah Sherry, chairman of Woldingham Parish Council, who had established its own bid to acquire the club, stated:
“The Woldingham community was always concerned that the site might be subject to development and we would lose this important part of the green belt. While we are pleased the long history of golf at North Downs will continue, we hope the new owners will respect the site and avoid any encroachment on this unique piece of our natural heritage.”
