Review: Peter Buck at the Barn Theatre, Oxted

A sold-out Barn Theatre was treated to a visit by Peter Buck, the guitarist for US rock giants R.E.M., on Saturday 16 April. Buck, who has pursued numerous musical projects since R.E.M. disbanded in 2011, was in the middle of a short UK tour in support of his album with British indie rock musician Luke Haines, formerly of The Auteurs.

Haines and Buck were joined by Scott McCaughey (bass), Nick Fowler (keys) and Linda Pitmon (drums), and performed songs from Haines and Buck's excellent debut album 'Beat Poetry for Survivalists', released in 2020, as well as numerous songs from their as yet untitled second album, which is due out in October.

An appreciative crowd were treated to a ninety-minute set of superb (and loud!) rock 'n' roll, and the band were in great spirits, following a brilliant opening set by Americana-folk band Wyatt Riot, who hail from Oxted and Ramsgate.

The gig was part of The Oxted Sessions, a series of music events at venues around Oxted, bringing a variety of international touring acts to this corner of Surrey. Details on forthcoming events, and tickets, can be found at wegottickets.com/oxtedsessions
