On Thursday this week 4th Caterham (St Francis) Rainbows and Brownies were proud to enrol no less than 4 new Rainbows and 5 new Brownies – and one cat. On Saturday our youngest Rainbow, Sophie, had the chance to make her promise. This was especially poignant for Robin as she had also enrolled mum, Tiger, when she was a Brownie, and Sophie’s big sister too. What made this even more special is that 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of 4th Caterham (St Francis) Rainbows and Brownies with Robin at the helm.
The Brownie unit actually started in 1956 but had to close for a while before Robin was asked to start it up again. As you might expect, badges have been made to celebrate and any previous Rainbows or Brownies that would like to purchase one to remember their time in Guiding are welcome to do so – contact details below.
Saturday was also a big day for Brownie Bea, who set up a stall outside her home selling delicious puddings, pies, home-made fudge and hot chocolates to friends, family and passers-by. In doing so, she raised over £153 pounds for the Born Free Foundation to save the tigers, and of course fulfilled part of her Charities badge.
All our units in Caterham on the Hill and Chaldon have been fortunate to be able to offer some form of meeting this year, be it online or even in person when allowed. It remains for me to thank each and every one of our amazing volunteer leaders and helpers; we all have busy day jobs as well as giving of our time and energy to the girls, providing a safe space for them to find their voice and to grow and develop their skills in a wide range of areas. It really couldn’t be done without the grown-ups, and there are plenty of ways to get involved, from helping with admin, buying resources, thinking up activities, and of course being there at meetings, encouraging and inspiring. It could be an hour a week or an hour a year – get in touch with me, Sue Corrance, District Commissioner for Caterham on the Hill and Chaldon.
