Home of The Caterham Beacon is the The Westway Common. The Beacon is lit for commemorative occasions. Previous events have included royal births and weddings, the Queens Diamond Jubilee and more recently it was lit for VJ Day to signify the 75th anniversary of the end of WW2.
Piper Bob Ash played at 5 local locations in Caterham and local villages . During the afternoon Sonia Hunt the town crier read a message of peace and many local residents gathered in the sunshine to talk whilst enjoying a stay at home socially distanced street party.
The evening then saw the lighting of the beacon at 8.45pm. Residents gathered socially distanced on the common. Music played in the background and there was the option of being served wine or beer from the barrel which was donated by Asahi UK Ltd and served Fullers London Pride. It was a lovely community event.
